Senior advocate R. Venkataramani has been re-appointed as the Attorney
General of India for two years, effective October 1, 2025.
¨ His previous three-year term ended on
September 30, 2025.
¨ The notification of re-appointment was issued
by the Law Ministry.
¨ He succeeded K.K. Venugopal as Attorney
General on September 30, 2022.
¨ The President of India re-appointed him based
on the Union government’s recommendation.
¨ The Attorney General has the constitutional
right to appear in any court in India.
¨ The AG provides legal advice to the
government and handles complex litigations.
¨ Mr. Venkataramani has practised
constitutional, tax, human rights, civil, criminal, consumer, and service laws.
¨ He was enrolled in the Bar Council of Tamil
Nadu in 1977 and moved to the Supreme Court in 1979.

He was designated a senior advocate in 1997 and has served as a member
of the Law Commission in 2010.
