Prime
Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for
development works worth around ₹6,500 crore in Darrang, Assam.
Assam’s
rapid progress with a growth rate of nearly 13% was credited to the joint
efforts of the people, the Union government, and the state government.
These
included the Darrang Medical College and Hospital, along with a nursing college
and a general nursing and midwifery school.
They
also comprised the 2.9-km Narengi-Kuruwa bridge and the 118.5-km Guwahati Ring
Road connecting Kamrup and Darrang districts in Assam and Ri-Bhoi district in
Meghalaya.
The
Prime Minister emphasized that the next chapter of India’s development belongs
to the East and Northeast, which had lagged after Independence.
He
said that strong infrastructure in road, rail, air, and digital connectivity
has boosted tourism, created jobs, and made life easier.
GST
reforms with reduced rates on cement, cancer medicines, and insurance premiums
were declared, along with tax relief on vehicles.
The
number of medical colleges in India has doubled in the last 11 years—equal to
the total number of medical colleges built in the 60-65 years after
independence.
Assam
had only six medical colleges before 2014, and with the completion of Darang
Medical College, the state will now have 24 medical colleges.
He
said the central government is preparing to launch a mission to foil the
conspiracy to change the demography of the country's border areas with the help
of infiltrators.
After
the 2023 delimitation, the Mangaldoi Lok Sabha constituency was renamed
Darrang-Udalguri.
It
had been at the center of the anti-infiltration Assam Movement from 1979 to
1985, which established the “Bangladeshi issue” as a key plank during
elections.
