  • On December 20, 2002, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) established a World Solidarity Fund to help counter global poverty.
  • In 2005, the UN designated December 20 as International Human Solidarity Day to recognise this day.
  • World Solidarity Fund was set up in February 2003 as a trust fund of the United Nations Development Programme.
  • Its objective is to eradicate poverty and promote human and social development in developing countries, especially among the poorest sections of their populations.
