For the first time, India will chair the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs.
India has been selected to chair the 68th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND).
Shambhu Kumaran, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Vienna, officially assumed the Chairmanship of CND.
Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) is the national policy-making body of the United Nations on drug-related matters.
This is the first time India has been named chair of this important UN body.
Under the chairmanship, India is expected to articulate the interests of the Global South in line with its role in promoting the interests and perspectives of developing nations in global discussions.
India will also work on the ongoing work of the CND to foster dialogue and understanding on drug policy issues.
The Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) was established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 1946.
