- The United Kingdom announced that it would cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

- For an initial period of 99 years, the UK will have the authorized power over Diego Garcia.
- Mauritius will now be free to implement a program of resettlement on the islands of the Chagos Archipelago.
- Britain has been controlling the Chagos Islands since 1814, and it was detached from Mauritius in 1965.
