Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a meeting held in New Delhi on 28 August 2024, has approved the development of 12 new projects in the country’s 6 major Industrial Corridors. These projects included the development of industrial nodes and smart cities along the industrial corridors. With this approval, the total number of projects to be developed under the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP) is 44.

Newly Approved Projects

  • The 12 newly approved projects will be set up in 10 states along the 6 major Industrial Corridors, with an estimated investment of  Rs 28,602 crore.
  • The newly approved projects are – two in Andhra Pradesh ( Orvakal and Kopparthy) and two in Uttar Pradesh (Agra and Prayagraj).
  • One each in Uttrakhand ( Khurpia), Punjab (Rajpura-Patiala), Maharashtra (Dighi ), Kerala (Palakkad), Bihar (Gaya), Telangana(Zaheerabad)  and Rajasthan (Jodhpur-Pali).

National Industrial Corridor Development Programme

  • The government of India has launched the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP) to develop the country’s industrial infrastructure.
  • Under the ambitious National Infrastructure Pipeline, 11 Industrial Corridors, with 44 industrial nodes/areas/smart cities, are being developed in four phases.
  • The central government is developing the Industrial Corridors in partnership with the state government.

The objectives of the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP) are

  • Develop Greenfield Industrial regions/areas/nodes with sustainable infrastructure and make plug-and-play Infrastructure available at the plot level.
  • Attract domestic and foreign investment  in these areas to boost India’s manufacturing sector,
  • Achieve the goal of a USD 2 trillion export target by 2030.
  • Development of smart cities along the Industrial corridor.
  • Creation of employment opportunities.
  • To make India a global manufacturing hub with world-class infrastructure.
  • To make a developed country by 2047.

Industrial Corridors in india

  • The Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), approved in 2007, is the first industrial corridor being developed in the country. It is being developed with Japan’s assistance.

11 Industrial Corridors are

  1. Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC);
  2. Chennai Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC);
  3. Amritsar Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC);
  4. East Coast Industrial Corridor (ECIC) with Vizag Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC)
  5. Bengaluru Mumbai Industrial Corridor (BMIC);
  6. Extension of CBIC to Kochi via Coimbatore;
  7. Hyderabad Nagpur Industrial Corridor (HNIC);
  8. Hyderabad Warangal Industrial Corridor (HWIC);
  9. Hyderabad Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (HBIC);
  10. Odisha Economic Corridor (OEC) and
  11. Delhi Nagpur Industrial Corridor (DNIC).

National Infrastructure Pipeline

  • The government of India launched the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) in 2019. It aims to attract Rs 111 lakh crore investment in the infrastructure during FY20-25  so as to build high-quality infrastructure across the country.
