The 70th National Film Awards were announced on 16 August. The heads of the jury of various sections of the National Film Awards handed over the list of winners of the 70th National Film Awards to Union Minister of Railways, Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi. The National Awards were announced keeping in mind the films released between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2022 this year. Rahul Rawail was the chairman of the Feature Film Jury, Neela Madhab Panda was the chairman of the Non-Feature Film Jury, and Gangadhar Mudlair was the chairman of the Best Writing on Cinema Jury.
Major winners of the 70th National Film Awards
- Malayalam language film Aattam won the Best Feature Film award.
- In the acting categories, Rishab Shetty was awarded the Best Actor award, while the Best Actress honor was shared by Nithya Menen and Manasi Parekh.
- Ponniyin Selvan: 1 became the most award winning film. The film received four awards in different categories.

Why National Film Awards 2022 Delayed
- The award ceremony of National Film Awards was delayed by two years to the year 2024 due to the Covid pandemic. The 69th National Film Awards, held in 2023, honoured films certified in 2021.
- Rocketry won the Best Feature Film award at that ceremony, while Allu Arjun won the Best Actor award. The Best Actress award was shared by Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon.
When did National Film Awards start
- National Film Awards were established in 1954. National Film Awards are overseen by the Directorate of Film Festivals.
- The first award for Best Feature Film was won by Marathi film Shyamchi Aai.
- Lagaan, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, remains the most-awarded film in the history of the awards. The film won eight honours in the year 2002.
- Apart from recognising excellence in Indian cinema, the National Film Awards also recognise the best films in regional languages.
- The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is presented to film stalwarts for lifetime achievement. Last year the Dadasaheb Phalke Award was given to iconic actress Waheeda Rehman.
