33rd Summer Olympics

• The Paris Olympics was held from 26 July to 11 August 2024.
• The 33rd Summer Olympics ended on 11 August 2024, when the International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, accompanied by the athletes and French swimmer Leon Marchand, extinguished the Olympic flame in the host city of Paris, France.
• The Olympic flag was handed over to the city of Los Angeles, USA, which will host the next 34th Summer Olympics in 2028.
• The Olympics games are held every four years, starting with the 1896 Athens Olympics.
• Los Angeles will host its third Summer Olympics having been hosted in 1932 and 1984.
• Paris also hosted its third Summer Olympics, having hosted in 1900, 1924, and 2024.
• Manu Bhaker and PR Sreejesh were the Indian flag bearers at the closing ceremony.
• Badminton player PV Sindhu and table tennis player Sharath Kamal were the Indian flag bearers at the opening ceremony.
• Unlike the opening ceremony, which was held in the open on the River Seine, the closing ceremony was held in France’s biggest stadium, Stade de France, in Paris.

3rd Best Indian Performance at the Paris Olympics

• India, which sent a 117-member sportspersons team to the Paris Olympics, won only six medals: one silver and five bronze. Six Indian players finished in fourth position, missing the bronze medal by a whisker.
• This was the third-best finish for India at the Summer Olympics.
• India’s best performance in the Olympics was at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where India won seven medals-one gold, two silver and four bronzes.
• India’s second-best performance was in the 2012 London Olympics when it won six medals—two silver and four bronze.

• Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal in javelin throw by throwing a distance of 89.45 meters. This was his second Olympic medal, making him India’s fifth two-time Olympic medalist.
• Manu Bhaker became the first Indian woman to win a medal in Olympic shooting. She also became the first athlete from independent India to win two medals in the same sport by winning medals in individual and mixed team events.
• India won three medals in shooting, including the first Olympic medal in 50 m rifle 3 positions by Swapnil Kusale. This was India’s highest medal haul in shooting at the Olympics.
• Indian athletes competed for 69 medals in 16 sports such as archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, equestrian, golf, hockey, judo, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis and tennis.
• Lakshya Sen became the first Indian to reach the semi-finals of men’s badminton at the Olympics and finished fourth.
• Wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified in the women’s 50kg category after reaching the final for being 100 grams overweight.
• India has won a total of 41 Olympic medals to date. Notable achievements include Norman Pritchard’s silver medal (1900 Paris), KD Jadhav’s bronze (1952 Helsinki), Karnam Malleswari’s bronze (2000 Sydney), Abhinav Bindra’s gold (2008 Beijing) and Neeraj Chopra’s gold (2020 Tokyo).
• The men’s hockey team has won 13 medals, including eight gold, while India has won eight medals in wrestling. India’s best ever Olympic performance came at Tokyo 2020, winning seven medals, including one gold. India’s second-best performance came at the 2012 London Olympics, when it won six medals (two silver andfour bronze).
