The Ministry of Electronics and IT launched an Indian Web Browser Development Challenge on 9 August 2023.The Indian Web Browser Development Challenge is being initiated by MeitY, Certificate in Computer Applications (CCA) and C-DAC.Indian Web Browser Development Challenge is an open challenge competition. The objective of this competition is to prepare an indigenous web browser for the country.Apart from this, the browser will promote crypto tokens, digital signatures, secure transactions and digital interactions.This challenge is designed to strengthen Atmanirbhar Bharat, Digital India and Digital Sovereignty.This challenge is an attempt to reach the end user of the Internet through a web browser.Under the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge, technology experts, innovators and developers from across the country were invited.

What is Indian Web Browser Development Challenge

  • Currently, Google’s web browser Chrome is mostly used to use the Internet.
  • Google is an American company. In such a situation, India is working on a plan to bring its own web browser.
  • More than 200 participants from different regions of the country were present in this competition (Indian Web Browser Development Challenge) organized by the Ministry of Electronics and IT.
  • People associated with government departments, startups, industry participated in this competition.
  • The Indian Web Browser Development Challenge was conducted with both online and offline mode.
  • MeitY is also currently working on a policy for cloud infrastructure in India.

Three stages in the challenge

  • After the first stage i.e. Ideation stage, 18 entries will be selected.
  • In the second stage eight participants will be selected to enter the final stage.
  • At the end a winner, first runner up and second runner up will be selected.
  • Out of the total prize pool of Rs 3.41 crore, Rs 1 crore will be given to the winner.
  • The winner will also be supported to take the developed browser to the next level.
  • The competition is being organized and funded by the Research and Development Division of the Ministry of IT and in association with the National Internet Exchange of India

  • Currently there are many types of web browsers available such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari etc.
