  • Rules for verified radar equipment to boost traffic enforcement notified by the Centre.
  • On 23 January, Rules for radar equipment for measuring the speed of vehicles were notified by the government under the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, to help traffic personnel measure speed limits effectively.
  • These guidelines will come into effect from July 1 to help the concerned industries comply with the provisions of the rules.
  • Verified and stamped radar equipment is vital for applications such as traffic enforcement to prevent accidents and wear and tear on roads.
  • Verified radar equipment will significantly enhance the effectiveness and reliability of law enforcement officers in traffic enforcement.
  • A committee was constituted under the chairmanship of the director, Indian Institute of Legal Metrology (IILM), Ranchi, which submitted the preliminary draft rules.
  • The draft rules were presented to State Legal Metrology Departments, RRSL officials, manufacturers, and VCOs to explain their requirements.
  • The rules will also ensure accurate measurement of speed, distance, and other relevant parameters.
  • Speed measurement devices work by detecting the time it takes a vehicle to travel between two points or by measuring the change in position over time using radar, laser, or other technologies.
