Key highlights of the report
- Nearly 55 per cent of Indian graduates are expected to be globally employable in 2025, up from 2 per cent in 2024 (an increase of 7 per cent).
- Management graduates (78 per cent) have the highest global employability, the report said, followed by engineering students (5 per cent), MCA students (71 per cent) and science graduates (58 per cent).
- States like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Delhi are emerging as major hubs of employable talent, while cities like Pune, Bengaluru and Mumbai are leading in providing skilled workforce.
- According to gender analysis, employability for men is expected to increase by 8 per cent to 53.5 per cent in 2025, while for women it is projected to decline from 50.9 per cent to 47.5 per cent.
- By 2025, 50 per cent of secondary and tertiary students are expected to receive vocational training, positioning India to play a key role in the global talent market.
- The report also emphasises that linking vocational training to industry requirements, especially in emerging sectors such as AI, cybersecurity and green energy, is of utmost importance.
Government Skill Development Schemes
- Skill India Mission (SIM): This mission is run by MSDE to provide skill development, re-skilling and advanced skill training. It trains youth through a network of skill development centres, colleges and institutes.
- Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY): This scheme provides skills to youth through short-term training and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). It aims to provide skill training to youth in both rural and urban areas.
- Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS): This scheme provides skill training to non-recruited, newly-recruited and school dropouts, with special preference given to women, SC, ST, OBC and minorities.
National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme
- This scheme promotes apprenticeship training in industries and provides financial assistance for apprentices. Under this, basic training is given in industries and practical training at the workplace.
- Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS): This scheme is offered through ITIs, where youth are provided skill training in various economic sectors to prepare them for industries and provide self-employment opportunities.
- Schemes by other ministries: Several other schemes like Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY), RSETI, NULM, TEJAS and SANKALP also provide opportunities for skill development and advancement.
