Union Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Vidyalaxmi scheme, designed to provide financial assistance to meritorious students for higher education. Objective: It aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to provide collateral-free, guarantor-free loans to students. Eligibility Criteria: Students enrolled in institutions ranked within the top 100 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), and those in the 101-200 range from state government and all central government governed institutions.
Objectives of Pradhan Mantri Vidyalakshmi Yojana
- Ensuring financial inclusion in education: Helps meritorious students pursue higher education without financial barriers.
- Supporting top educational institutions: Applicable only to institutions ranked highly as per National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
- Transparent and digital access: Use of digital and transparent platform for loan management.
Supplementary Government Schemes: Two major schemes are included with PM Vidyalakshmi Yojana
- Central Sector Interest Subsidy Scheme (CSIS): Provides full interest subsidy during the moratorium period on loans up to Rs 10 lakh to students with annual income up to Rs 4.5 lakh.
- Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme for Education Loans (CGFSEL): Supports education loans with a guarantee fund.
- PM Vidyalakshmi and PM-USP schemes provide comprehensive financial assistance to students to pursue quality education.
National Education Policy (NEP) 2020
- The new National Education Policy 2020 is India’s first education policy of the 21st century, which replaces the National Policy on Education (NPE) 1986. It was prepared by a committee headed by Dr. K. Kasturirangan. NEP 2020 aims to bring about comprehensive reforms in the education sector, making it compatible with the requirements of the 21st century.
