National Highways Authority of India has invited Expression of Interest (EoI) for implementation of Satellite based Electronic Toll Collection System. The EoI receiving entity has to develop a geo-referenced map and toll-charging software for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS).It involves linking a geo-referenced digital map or image to a reliable earth coordinate system so that users can determine the location of each point shown on the map or image on the Earth’s surface.
GNSS is a generic term for any constellation of satellites that transmits position, navigation and timing data. It is used in all modes of transport like space stations, aviation, maritime, rail, road and mass transport.Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) is an autonomous system designed to cover the territory of India and the 1500 km area adjacent to its mainland. This system consists of 7 satellites. NHAI has planned to implement the GNSS-based electronic toll collection system along with the RFID-based FASTag currently being used by vehicles. FASTag is a device that uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to pay toll while the vehicle is in motion.
