Joshimath has been renamed as Jyotirmath and Kosiyakutoli as Kainchi Dham.
Uttarakhand government’s proposal to rename Joshimath tehsil in Chamoli district as Jyotirmath, and Kosiyakutoli tehsil in Nainital district as Pargana Shri Kainchi Dham has been approved by the Central government.
After Adi Guru Shankaracharya visited it in the 8th century, the Joshimath region was originally called Jyotirmath.
Joshimath is considered the gateway to Badrinath Dham.
Kosiyakutoli in Nainital will now be known as Pargana Shri Kainchi Dham tehsil, after Baba Neem Karoli Maharaj’s ashram.
Kainchi Dham has also been included in the Manaskhand Mandirmala Mission.
