The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has increased the annual allocation of green ammonia from 550,000 tonnes to 750,000 tonnes to meet the growing demand of the fertilizer sector in India. This initiative of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has increased the support for green hydrogen in India.

National Green Hydrogen Mission

  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) is an important initiative to encourage commercial production of green hydrogen in India and make India a net exporter of the fuel, which lays down a roadmap for green hydrogen in India.
  • The main objective of this mission is to increase the demand for green hydrogen in India as well as promote its production, use and export.

Following are some of the important initiatives under the National Green Hydrogen Mission in India

  • Green Hydrogen Transition Programme (SIGHT): It aims to provide strategic interventions for the production of green hydrogen.
  • Manufacturing of electrolysers: It will encourage the development of electrolysers, which use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.
  • Incentivising the production of green ammonia: The National Green Hydrogen Mission will also encourage the production of green ammonia, which is used in the production of steel and cement.
  • Launching a dedicated portal: A dedicated portal has been launched under the National Green Hydrogen Mission that provides information about the mission and steps of the green hydrogen ecosystem in India.
  • Schemes in other sectors: India has also launched other initiatives to promote the use of green hydrogen in the steel, transport and shipping sectors.

Other initiatives launched in India related to renewable energy

  • National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM).
  • PM-KUSUM.
  • International Solar Alliance.
