- Scotland’s senior judge, Lord Carloway, oversaw the ceremony to install Swinney as first minister.
- In a parliamentary vote on 7 May 2024, Mr Swinney won the nomination for first minister.
- Mr Swinney was elected Scotland’s first minister in a parliamentary ballot after the formal resignation of Humza Yousaf on 7 May 2024.
- Mr Swinney defeated three rival nominees (Alex Cole-Hamilton, Douglas Ross and Anas Sarwar).
