The Union Cabinet has extended the tenure of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman Nitin Gupta.
According to the official release, Nitin Gupta will remain on the post of CBDT Chairman till June 30, 2024.
Nitin Gupta is an Indian Revenue Service officer of 1986 batch.
CBDT is the apex decision making body in the Income Tax Department.
All matters relating to direct taxes in India were handed over to the Central Board of Direct Taxes with effect from 1 January 1964 and it derives its authority from the Board of Revenue Act 1963.
CBDT is a part of the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance.
On one hand CBDT provides necessary inputs for direct tax policies and schemes in India while on the other hand it is responsible for administration of direct tax laws through the Income Tax Department.
The Chairman, who is ex-officio Special Secretary to the Government of India, heads the CBDT. In addition, the CBDT has six members who are ex-officio Additional Secretaries to the Government of India.
