- Buoyed by the success of its National Cinema Day 2022, the Multiplex Association of India (MAI) and cinemas theatres across the country will celebrate October 13 as National Cinema Day this year.
- On October 13 2023, the cinema halls will offer movie tickets for Rs 99. However, this offer will not be applicable to recliners and premium formats like IMAX or 4DX.
Multiplex Association of India
- Multiplex Association of India is an association of multiplex operators in India. It is sponsored by FICCI( Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry).
- Its members operate around 75% of the multiplex screens in the country.
- It is a lobby group which works with various regulatory bodies and industry bodies to address various challenges faced by the cinema exhibition sector.
History of Cinema in India
- The Lumiere brothers, Augustus and Louis Lumiere of France, invented cinematographe (from where we have the name cinema) in 1895.
- In India, the Lumiere brothers organised the first cinema show of India in Mumbai on July 17 1896 in Mumbai.
- The first full feature film to be made in India was ‘Raja Harischnadra’. It was a silent film made by Dhandiraj Govindraj Phalke or Dada Saheb Phalke and was released on May 3 1913.
- Dada Saheb Phalke is considered as the father of Indian cinema.
- The first talking movie in India was Alam Ara, made by Ardeshir Irani and released on March 14 ,1931.
- The first coloured feature film in India was Kisan Kanya in 1937. It was directed by Moti Gidwani.
- The first 3D film to be made in India was a Tamil film, My Dear Kuttichathan, which was released in 1983. It was later dubbed in Hindi and released as Chhota Chetan in 1984.
