The Central government has brought a Bill in the Parliament giving itself significant say in the appointment and removal of Directors of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), and in initiating inquiries.The purpose of which is to repeal some of the powers assigned to IIMs in the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) Act 2017.
In the 2017 Act, the Board of Governors of the IIMs had the authority to make important appointments and decisions.
And according to the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill 2023, the President of India will be the visitor of each institute.
The Visitor may appoint one or more persons to review the work and progress of any institution, to inquire into its affairs, and to report in such manner as the Visitor may direct.
The Board may also recommend to the Visitor such inquiry as it thinks fit against the institution which is not functioning in accordance with the provisions and objectives of the Act.
