In order to avert the danger of frequent floods of Yamuna river in Delhi and surrounding areas, the Haryana government has decided to construct a dam. This strategic initiative is not only aimed at mitigating the effects of floods but also has several other benefits.

The primary objective behind the decision of the Haryana government to build the dam is to stop the devastating floods caused by the Yamuna River. These floods continue to pose a major threat to the city of Delhi and areas adjacent to the river in Haryana. By building dams, the authorities aim to regulate and manage water flow, thereby protecting lives and properties.

The dam project, with its lofty goals of flood prevention and management, comes with a substantial estimated cost. The Haryana government is all set to invest a huge amount of Rs 6,134 crore to execute this infrastructure initiative.

Dimensions of Dam Reservoir

  • The proposed dam will have a reservoir that will span an impressive length of 14 km.
  • This vast reservoir area will play an important role in managing water levels, reducing the risk of flooding and providing a controlled outlet for excess water.

Strategic placement and displacement

  • It will be built about 4.5 km upstream of Hathinikund barrage located in Yamunanagar district.
  • However, the construction of this dam would require the displacement of nine villages. Additionally, an 11 km stretch of NH-73 would need to be shifted.

Capacity and Limit Area

  • Once completed, the dam reservoir capacity is estimated to be 10.82 lakh cusecs. This expansion capacity is about three times the highest water level released in the Yamuna in the past.
  • In addition, the dam area is bordered by two neighboring states – Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, indicating the potential for collaborative efforts in flood management.
